PTK Fall Induction Ceremony

Melfa, VA – TwentyEastern Shore Community Collegestudents were inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honor society on Thursday, November 5, at a special ceremony. Students inducted were: Tye Burns, Julia Chuquin Broad, Ja’Nay Crippen, Will Deuter, Marcus Fletcher, Nicole Habel, Wendy Harris, Deonte Hope, Robert Johnson, Jacob Loescher, Tom Palmer, Lauren Ritter, Tommy Russell, Gregory Smith, Brad Spence, Stephanie Sorey, Victoria Warren, Tomas Yebra, Matt Young, and Anni Usack.
The students chosen for membership are recognized for their academic excellence and must have at least a 3.25 GPA (grade point average) to be considered. Robin Rich-Coates, who serves as the PTK advisor commented, “I m proud of the students and their accomplishments. They have worked so hard to achieve excellence in academics, leadership and service to their communities.”
Participating in the ceremony were PTK chapter officers, Bobbi Kae Gentry (President), Emily Phillips (Vice-President), Rosie Tankard, (Vice President) and Lakishia Banister (Treasurer.) Eve Belote, served as the guest speaker and College President, Dr. Linda Thompson-Glover congratulated the new members on their accomplishment.
Phi Theta Kappa, founded in 1918, serves 12,200 two year-colleges around the world. The Society’s operations are global in scope with chapters located in all 50 United States, U.S. Territories, Canada and Germany. Nearly 1.5 million have accepted membership in Phi Theta Kappa since its founding, with almost 100,000 members inducted each year. The ESCC PTK chapter was established in 1990 and has been a Five-Star Chapter (the highest level of achievement) for the past thirteen years.
Four chapter members (Emily Phillips, Bobbi Kae Gentry, Lakishia Banister, and Marcus Fletcher) and the advisor, Robin Rich-Coates, recently attended the Phi Theta Kappa of Virginia Regional Honors Institute at the College of William and Mary. The honors study topic was “The Paradox of Affluence: choices, Challenges, and Consequences.” Speakers included Anndrena Belcher, storyteller from Appalachia; Greg Jones, former A&E executive, and Regina Root, ecofashion expert. The program also included a tour of the Yorktown Victory Center and a Murder Mystery Dinner Theater.
To further study “The Paradox of Affluence,” the chapter has hosted an Honor Seminar Series this fall featuring internationally known speakers including Ralph Nader, is hosting an “Are You Hungry Tonight?” simulation activity to raise awareness of hunger on the Eastern Shore, and are coordinating all of the ESCC student organizations to provide Thanksgiving dinners to seven needy ESCC students and their families.
